The Mermonkey is an amphibious tower that is meant to play a supporting role while still providing offensive coverage, similar to the Alchemist. The relatively cheap cost for its various upgrades even with the tier 5 upgrades compared to other tier 5 upgrades from other towers with the exception of Popseidon due to Popseidon being a high DPS tower. Hence, farming/other towers are requiring if one wishes to use Popseidon in their defenses. Even the other tier 5 upgrades require other towers to help carry the game due to either lacking the damage type needed to combat DDTs (Lord of the Abyss) or lacking solo DPS in general (The Final Harmonic).

Path 1 is all about stalling the bloons to allow the Mermonkey to damage the bloons and supporting other towers with pierce buffs, with tentacles with Abyss Dweller, coating bloons with ink with Abyssal Warrior, and allowing water towers to be placed near it with Lord of the Abyss.

Path 2 is all about stalling the bloons but with freeze powers instead and general AOE damage, with Riptide Champion producing energy waves to hit more bloons, Arctic Knight improving on the wave aspect, and Popseidon itself being a powerful AOE tower with respectable single target damage.

Path 3 is all about stalling the bloons but via diversion, similar to how the Bloonchipper worked in Bloons TD 5, starting from Alluring Melody. Symphonic Resonance would improve on the diversion aspect to divert MOAB-class bloons. The Final Harmonic would allow for even BADs and boss bloons to be affected partially via the diversion's instant dentation of all damage-over-time effect.

General strategy[]

For heroes, Admiral Brickell, Obyn Greenfoot, and Sauda are the go-to heroes in a Mermonkey-heavy run. The hero to choose more of would depend on the map itself (e.g. Generally Brickell in water heavy maps like Spice Islands and Obyn otherwise).
- For Admiral Brickell, just note that her Naval Tactics ability is completely useless if she's played near a land-based Lord of the Abyss since any water towers placed on land do not count as water towers, meaning they do not get the Naval Tactics buff. This includes herself.
- For Obyn, he only buffs the Mermonkeys when he hits level 11 so until then, you need other towers to help defend.
- For Sauda, her upgrades allow her to deal additional damage to bloons that are slowed or frozen. Even Path 3 Mermonkeys help her as they can divert the bloons to go near Sauda for longer, allowing her more time to damage them.
Path 1 Alchemists are good for the Mermonkeys, especially with Acidic Mixture Dip. Since most Mermonkeys have the Shatter damage property, Acidic Mixture Dip can grant the necessary Lead popping power that the Mermonkeys are missing. Upgrading the Alchemists further into Berserker Brew and Stronger Stimulant is also helpful in most cases as it will increase the general pierce of the Mermonkey projectile, allowing more bloons to be damaged by the projectile. (Take note however that only the projectile gets the pierce boost, not the resulting explosion).
Ice Monkey work well with the Mermonkeys due to their base attack already being able to damage frozen bloons, especially with Riptide Champion and above dealing bonus damage to all frozen bloons. Path 1 Ice Monkeys can also benefit the Mermonkeys to deal increase overall DPS by making affected bloons brittle.
Carrier Flagship: On water maps, the attack speed buff can help all water-placed Mermonkeys.

Specific tower path combination[]

Path 1[]

Spike Factories (all paths): Because for the spike factory, pierce is equal to damage. Hence, Spike Factories work well with Path 1 Mermonkeys, especially with a 30% pierce buff to Perma-Spike, which can translate to either 650 damage per spike pile or 1,170 damage per spike pile with the Bigger Stacks crosspath.
Tack Shooters and Monkey Aces (all paths): Since these towers already shoot multiple projectiles at once, a pierce buff for them would boost their overall damage.
Ninja Monkeys (Path 1): As these Ninja monkeys already shoot multiple projectiles per attack, a pierce buff will greatly help them increase their overall DPS.
Sun Avatars: These Super Monkeys will greatly benefit from the increased pierce as they already shoot out multiple projectiles per attack.

Path 1 Glue Gunners: As these Mermonkeys are able to instantly detonate all damage-over-time effects, it will allow the Glue Gunner to repeatedly apply their glue on the same bloon, racking up huge damage on them.
Glaive Lord: Its has a high damage-over-time on the first bloon it hits. This means it can allow the Mermonkey to instantly detonate the damage-over-time effect and hence allow repeated application of the effect on the same bloon.
