The building excitement over the start of college football season will be decidedly muted this weekend for Big Ten fans in some West Coast markets. The San Jose Mercury News was first to report that Comcast cable customers in select markets were no longer able to access the Big Ten Network, as a carriage dispute has knocked it off the air. The two sides have just days left before fans miss their favorite team’s first game of the season, but Comcast has a track record of refusing to budge in these situations.

That means that this weekend’s home openers for the Ducks and Huskies could be threatened by the blackout. The Ducks play the Idaho Vandals on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET, while the Huskies face the Weber State Wildcats at 11 p.m. ET. Unless the dispute is solved before then, Comcast customers in the home markets of these schools might be out of luck.

Comcast is known for holding firm in disputes like this. The cabler recently endured a similar blackout of Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks, until the channels’ owner, Diamond Sports Group, agreed to allow the channels to be moved to the Xfinity TV Ultimate plan instead of remaining in its base package. That carriage dispute took three months to resolve.
